Spending your first holiday season together as a new couple can be great fun. You are probably excited about meeting each other’s families and bonding on a whole new level. You are probably even more excited about the gift buying and gift giving. This part of the holidays can be an awesome treat or a miserable flop. Here are a few things to look out for this Christmas.

Don’t Be Too Cheap

Being that this is the first Christmas, this day may set a bit of a precedence for the rest of the holiday season. You guys have been together for less than a year so you have some feelings there, but you may not be quite feeling like you are on the road to forever yet. You want to be careful not to be too cheap.

This is not the time to simply give a card or a corny gag gift. Go for something thoughtful. Think about the things that your mate likes or the passions that they have. You can make it really special without looking like a cheapskate.

Don’t Go Overboard

On the other end of the spectrum, you don’t want to cash in your 401k or deplete your savings for the first Christmas. Again, you have to remember that you are setting precedence for the rest of the time you are together. If you give your mate a gift that costs a few thousand dollars, how are you going to top that in the years to come?

Not only is giving a super expensive gift for the first Christmas not very responsible, it can seem a bit creepy. An expensive gift may look like you are trying to buy the affections of your new beau or that you are trying to show off. Either way, it puts you in a negative light. It could also make things pretty awkward going forward.

Appreciate the Effort

Not only do you want to be a good gift giver, but you want to also be gracious when it comes to accepting a gift from your significant other. You guys are still getting to know each other and you may not have everything figured out just yet. Remember that if you don’t get exactly what you wanted this year. Be thankful and appreciate the effort. Don’t ridicule your mate or trash talk them to your friends and family.

Remember what the holiday season is all about. It’s all about enjoying your friends, your family, and even possibly building some new traditions and great memories with your new beau. The thing to remember is to be thoughtful when it comes to gift giving. Think about the things that you can do that show your significant other that you really pay attention to what they like. It doesn’t take a lot of money to bring a smile to the face of the one that you love.
