There was a time in the United States when from the point of view of the law, interracial relationships and marriages were illegal. In today’s society attitudes towards interracial relationships have shifted. Some black men and women may still think today that interracial dating and marriage is not for the black women. The point here is if black men are into interracial relationships what is the problem when black women do the same? The society as a whole seems to be slowly warming up to the idea of interracial dating.
Attitudes have changed towards interracial dating. It is nonetheless largely the result of a generational gap. Younger Americans for instance are more accommodating of interracial relationships than older generations. Today there are many black women interested in meeting and going into relationships with people of other races. Some of those relationships end up as enduring marital love affairs. Many black women involved in interracial relationships do so mostly with white men.
Positive Experience for many black women
There are many interracial sites which cater to black women’s interest in the area of interracial dating. Black women dating experiences with their white partners tend to differ from person to person. I once had a conversation with a casual friend of mine by name Angela a black woman involved in interracial relationship. She shared her true life experiences dating a white man and a black man. She began by saying that she was not making any generalization because she understands that each person is different in their own unique ways. But her story, although it was unique to her situation but seems to be similar to few other stories I have read in an online magazine in the past. In a nutshell she said she felt like she was more appreciated by her white interracial partner who seemed more interested in knowing more about her feelings and problems, and wanted to be a part of the solution to her problem. By contrast she said her experience with her former black dating partner involves indifference to the point that she was forced to conclude that her black lover did not care for her as a person as much as she would like him to be.
Racial Tensions
But another interracial story which I read online, involves some aspects of racial tension unlike Angela’s experience. This story was from a black woman’s interracial website. The young woman shared her story of dating a white man who according to the narrator was very compassionate and loving person. The narrator’s unhappiness was not with her interracial partner, but with his closest buddy who she referred to as his ‘wingman’ for whatever that means. The narrator said the wingman had very little respect for her, and often pisses her off with his ways and things he says to her. She said that her unhappiness was because of the lack of respect from the wingman of her interracial partner. He once walked up to her in a bar in front of her interracial partner and told her, “You’re perfect! My friend likes black girls, but he doesn’t like them too dark!” The narrator felt insulted partly because of the insensitivity of the wingman’s remarks. Above all interracial relationships between black women and white men seems to be growing in the United States.
