Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter: these social media sites may be great ways to keep in touch with friends or share life moments, but they can also be huge pitfalls in relationships. Social media platforms like these have given partners new and inventive ways to reach out to people. However, what potentially counts as cheating also gets muddier in today’s technological world. Is it flirting if your boyfriend likes a female’s Instagram picture? Has your girlfriend crossed the line if she comments on a picture of a male friend on Facebook? It’s harder and harder to tell, but here are a few pretty concrete instances of behavior that’s considered cheating.
5. Inappropriate Social Media Comments
If your man follows that cute female coworker, stalks her Instagram or Facebook, and comments on how hot she is or how good she looks in several photos, this will raise some red flags. Some partners may consider this cheating, while others think that it’s certainly borderline behavior. Either way, sit your man down and discuss what’s going on with this coworker before anything physical does occur.
4. Direct Messaging or Facebook Messaging Inappropriate Comments
Your girlfriend has been direct-messaging with that male friend from the gym for a while. Her Instagram account is constantly lighting up with messages from him. With this type of communication, it seems like it’s only a matter of time before the two will exchange numbers and begin texting and then perhaps even meet up. Again, whether this counts as cheating will differ between couples, but it’s certainly not right.
3. Sexting
Many people strongly feel that sexting anyone besides your sweetie does count as cheating. Whether you have actual physical sex with the other person or not, talking about the act of sex through text message is nearly as bad as the real thing. With technology making it easier to find people to sext with than ever before, if you feel like something is amiss with your significant other, don’t be afraid to bring it up and attempt to open some dialogue about the issue.
2. Sending Inappropriate Pictures
Sending nudes is also a behavior that many people would classify as cheating. Although no actual physical sexual activity is occurring, most of the time, people who send nudes to others probably intend to get sexually intimate with that person at some point. If you have caught your boyfriend or girlfriend sending nudes to someone else, you have to decide if you can forgive them.
1. Not Becoming Facebook Official and Acting Single
Becoming Facebook official, or when a couple changes their relationship status on Facebook to “in a relationship,” is a rite of passage in today’s time. Most couples don’t consider their relationship to be legitimate or real until it’s on Facebook. Therefore, when a man or woman is reluctant to change their Facebook relationship status, there’s typically a reason. If this person is tied down to you but their status reads “single” and they prefer to act like they’re single by chatting up or meeting up with others, this also counts as cheating.
