On a first date, it’s natural that anyone will be a little nervous. Even if you’ve spoken to this person before through text message, emails, or even a quick phone chat, once you’re face-to-face with your potential partner, the jitters can take over. After you get past the pleasantries, silence may ensue, making the entire date awkward. Keep the conversation flowing with these interesting questions.
10. What Kind of Movies/Music/TV Shows Do You Like and Why?
This icebreaker question goes beyond the standard query of your date’s hobbies. By asking why they like what they do, you get a feel for what kind of entertainment that they gravitate towards.
9. What Makes You Laugh?
A shared sense of humor is important in a relationship, and this question allows you to figure out what tickles your date’s funny bone. Perhaps they enjoy standup comedy or cat videos on YouTube or they have a favorite kind of joke.
8. What Are Your Nicknames If Any and Why?
If you don’t want to go full-in and ask about your date’s childhood, questioning them about a nickname lets you dip your toes into the past. Hearing about why your date earned their moniker clues you into their life and also hopefully endears them to you.
7. What Are Your Pet Peeves?
Everyone has something that annoys them. Your date might not be too descriptive as they’re trying to make a good impression, but this question lets you know what kinds of behavior to avoid. Feel free to share your own pet peeves as well.
6. Do You Have a Bucket List? What’s on It?
This two-part question lets you get a good scope of your date without going into too much depth (that can occur on a later date). You can figure out where your date wants to travel, which activities they want to add into their life, and what kinds of milestones that they hold dear. You can learn a lot about someone with this question.
5. Have You Found Your Calling in Life?
Everyone should have a passion, whether it’s one that’s just a hobby or one that they’ve made into their occupation. This gives them a zest for life that someone without a calling just doesn’t possess. Listening to your date talk about their passion will let you know if it aligns with your interests.
4. Tell Me about Your Friends?
A person’s friends are a reflection on them, so learning about your date’s buddies lets you know what kind of people that your date enjoys associating with. You don’t need to know their names or occupations per se, but maybe whether your date prefers a small or large circle of friends.
3. How Do You Spend Your Spare Time?
If they’re a big bar/club person and you’re more of a homebody or you prefer the thrills of mountain climbing while they like relaxing with a good movie, now’s the time to figure this out. Besides determining if your ways of spending time align, you can also keep their answer in mind for a later date.
2. What’s Your Favorite Place?
Perhaps it’s their childhood home, the beach, or a bar, but a date’s favorite place likely has some sentimental value attached to it. Not only do you get to learn more about your date’s preferences, but maybe you can visit this place on a second date.
1. What Kind of Goals Are You Focused on Right Now?
This question is great because it lets you get a feel for whether your date wants something long-term without coming right out and asking it. Your date may talk about their current job, expanding their career, getting a house, traveling, or getting married and starting a family.
